Open cell insulation is a form of spray foam insulation where individual cells of material are never completely closed, thereby allowing an air barrier but not a water barrier. This is much more “sponge-like” than closed cell and is often used in interior walls. It has excellent sound reduction but is not recommended for outdoor applications.
